The SDI Instructor Examination (IE) is the final step after your Instructor Development Course (IDC). This 2-day assessment will test your teaching abilities, diving knowledge, and leadership under pressure. Once passed, you'll be qualified to teach the full range of SDI entry-level courses.

What to Expect During the IE

Theory Exams on SDI teaching standards & dive theory
Classroom teaching presentations
Confined water demonstrations
Open water teaching presentations

After successful completion, the examiner submits your evaluation to SDI Headquarters for final approval and certification.

What You'll Be Allowed to Teach

Once certified as an SDI Open Water Scuba Instructor, you can independently teach and certify the following:

Discover SCUBA
Open Water Diver
Advanced Adventure Diver
Rescue Diver
First Aid / CPR (if certified as EFR Instructor)
Divemaster

To teach specialties (e.g. Deep, Wreck, Nitrox), you must hold the corresponding Specialty Instructor rating.

Specialty Instructor Example:

Nitrox Specialty = Nitrox Instructor certification
Wreck Specialty = Wreck Instructor certification
Deep Specialty = Deep Instructor certification

Course Requirements

Minimum age: 18 years
Completed SDI IDC training
Minimum 100 logged dives
Good health and strong water skills
Available for full 2-day exam program

Exam Schedule

Day 1: Orientation, pool presentations, written theory exams
Day 2: Open water teaching presentations + final evaluations

Please meet your examiner the day before at our dive center (4–5 PM) to finalize paperwork and prepare equipment.
